The incident happened on the westbound Sunrise Highway near William Floyd Parkway in Shirley on Friday afternoon, Dec. 13.
Suffolk County Police said officers responded to a 2-vehicle collision at around 1:40 p.m. One person was pronounced dead at the scene and two others were hospitalized with injuries.
Authorities did not release the decedent's identity, nor did they elaborate on the nature or severity of the injuries.
Responding medics found an overturned dump truck that had collided with another vehicle before going off the roadway into a wooded area, according to preliminary radio traffic.
All westbound lanes of Sunrise Highway remained closed between William Floyd Parkway and Horseblock Road as of 6:30 p.m., according to 511NY.
